The United States joined allies at the United Nations to condemn a Russian drone incursion into Poland, pledging to protect every inch of NATO territory.
United States’ president Donald Trump had earlier angered allies by suggesting the overflight of Poland’s sovereign airspace might have been a Russian mistake. On Friday, Washington aligned with Western partners in a joint declaration accusing Moscow of violating international law and the UN Charter. Poland’s foreign minister, Marcin Bosacki, read the text minutes before an emergency Security Council meeting in New York requested by Warsaw.
Inside the session, Washington’s diplomat Dorothy Shea said the United States would defend every inch of NATO territory. She added the incident, whether deliberate or not against an ally, undermines US efforts in recent weeks to reach an agreement to end the war in Europe. Shea said that since the two presidents met in Alaska in mid-August, Russia has intensified bombing in Ukraine, causing deaths and damage to civilian facilities, and urged the Kremlin to pursue an immediate ceasefire.
Western members condemned the operation in Poland, which was neutralised without casualties. China offered general appeals for peace without action against Russia. Russia’s ambassador, Vasili Nebenzia, denied responsibility and claimed the accusations lacked evidence. He blamed Kyiv and Europe’s war party for spreading lies. Bosacki rejected this and said that Moscow targets civilians including in Poland, calling the breach unprecedented since the invasion of Ukraine.
