NATO announced Operation Eastern Sentry to reinforce its eastern flank, focusing on drone interception after Russian drones entered Polish airspace.
NATO will strengthen its eastern flank on the ground and in the air through an operation named Eastern Sentry, which prioritises intercepting drones. The plan was unveiled by NATO secretary general Rutte and United States general Alexus Grynkewich at a press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Specific operational details have not been released.
The step follows heightened tensions with Russia after Russian drones on Wednesday crossed into Poland’s airspace. The Polish Air Force, supported by Dutch F-35 fighter jets, shot them down. Fifteen drones were later found on Polish territory.
Poland’s prime minister Tusk said the country was at its closest point to an armed conflict since the Second World War after the incursion.
France and Germany yesterday announced they would send additional fighter aircraft to Poland to help protect Polish airspace and NATO’s eastern border.
