The German AI defence firm targets operational deployment within four years.
Munich-based Helsing has unveiled the CA-1 Europa, an autonomous uncrewed combat aerial vehicle designed as a collaborative combat aircraft, presenting a full-size design study at Grob Aircraft in Bavaria on 25 September 2025. The multi-role jet is intended to fly at high subsonic speeds for missions ranging from deep precision strikes to electronic support, and can operate either as a single asset or in swarms.
At the heart of the platform is Helsing’s Centaur AI pilot autonomy stack, integrated with Grob’s aircraft design and manufacturing expertise. The architecture pairs a mass-producible airframe with advanced software for situational awareness and mission execution. A flexible operating system is planned to accommodate a variety of sensors, self-protection suites, effectors and software applications, while a dedicated command-and-control layer is being developed to aid operators in planning, controlling and monitoring missions.
Helsing expects a production-standard CA-1 Europa to be operational within four years. Development and testing are under way at Grob Aircraft, with the programme drawing on industry partners across the European aerospace ecosystem. The company is prioritising scalability and a resilient European supply and logistics chain to support serial manufacture.
Company leaders frame the project as a step towards maintaining air superiority with uncrewed systems. Torsten Reil, Helsing’s co-founder and co-chief executive, has underscored the role of uncrewed fighter-type aircraft in future air dominance, while Stephanie Lingemann, senior director for the air domain, has pointed to autonomy as central to the design. Ned Baker, Helsing’s United Kingdom managing director, has said the CA-1 Europa is intended to bolster combat air capability for the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force. The initiative builds on a 28 May 2025 milestone, when Helsing and Sweden’s Saab flew the Centaur AI pilot in a Gripen E fighter, advancing work that began in 2023.
